Previously: At the Kensington gala, a little girl's whisper shatters a bride's lie. The patriarch's shocking discovery sends the gold-digger and her accomplice fleeing — but the real twist is yet to come.

The Lawyer's Midnight Revelation That Shook the Manor

The gala had dissolved into whispers and scandal, the guests ushered out by my staff with promises of discretion. But I knew the night was far from finished. I had seen the look in Chloe's eyes when I exposed her — not just fear, but a calculating glint that spoke of plans already set in motion.

I sent Mia to her room with her nanny, her innocent face still stained with tears that broke my heart. Then I summoned my lawyer, Harold Finch, to the study, where the fire crackled and the shadows danced like specters of my own doubts.

Harold arrived within the hour, his face grim, carrying a leather satchel that seemed to weigh more than it should. He placed a stack of documents on my desk, his fingers trembling slightly.

"My lord, I've been monitoring the accounts since you first expressed concerns about the wedding," he said, his voice low. "What I found is… disturbing."

I flipped through the pages, my blood running cold as I recognized the signatures. Sebastian's, yes, but also Chloe's — and they were all dated within the last month, all transferring shares of my shipping empire into an offshore shell company registered in the Cayman Islands.

"They were planning to strip the entire company," Harold explained, pointing to a line item. "The transfers are set to finalize at midnight tonight. After that, they'll have controlling interest, and they've already secured a buyer in Singapore."

My fist slammed against the desk, rattling the crystal decanter. "That snake. My own son. He sold his birthright for that vulture."

But Harold wasn't finished. He pulled out a smaller envelope, marked "Personal & Confidential," and slid it across the mahogany surface. "This came to my office this afternoon, addressed to you. I thought it prudent to bring it directly."

I tore it open, my eyes scanning the typed letter. It was from a private investigator I had hired weeks ago, when Chloe's pregnancy had seemed too convenient, too theatrical. The report was damning: Chloe had never been pregnant. The foam belly was a prop, yes, but the scheme was far more sinister.

She had been working with Sebastian to fabricate the heir, planning to produce a "son" who would inherit everything — a baby she would buy from a struggling mother in Romania, a child trafficked for the inheritance. The paper trembled in my hands as I read the details, my stomach churning with disgust.

I looked up at Harold, my voice a hoarse whisper. "She wasn't just after my money. She was going to steal a child to get it."

Harold nodded, his face pale. "The investigator has photos, recordings. We have enough to send them both to prison for attempted fraud and conspiracy to commit human trafficking."

But I didn't want prison. I wanted justice — and I wanted it my way.

I sent Harold away with instructions to freeze every account, every transfer, and to call the police but hold them until I gave the word. Then I made my way to the east wing, where Sebastian and Chloe had been confined under guard, their bags packed but their escape thwarted.

The door opened to reveal Chloe pacing, her dress discarded for a simple black sheath, her tiara gone. She spun to face me, her eyes blazing with defiance.

"You can't do this," she spat. "Sebastian is your son. He has rights —"
"He has nothing," I cut her off, my voice steel. "And neither do you. I've seen the transfers. I've read the investigator's report. You were going to buy a baby, Chloe. A child. For money."

Sebastian, slumped in a chair, looked up with hollow eyes. "Father, I can explain—"

"Explain how you betrayed our family? How you plotted to steal from your own daughter?" I took a step closer, my cane tapping a death knell on the floor. "You're both finished."

But Chloe laughed, a brittle sound that echoed off the walls. "You think you've won? The transfers were set to auto-execute at midnight. It's already eleven-thirty. In thirty minutes, I'll own your precious empire, and there's nothing you can do."

I smiled, a cold, hard thing that made her laughter die in her throat. "You're right about one thing, Chloe. The transfers were set to execute. But I had Harold put a stop-order on all of them — as of ten o'clock tonight. Every share, every account, every penny is frozen. You have nothing."

Her face went white, her hands flying to her mouth. Sebastian rose, his eyes wide with horror.

"You can't," he whispered. "We had a plan. We were going to start over."
"You were going to start over with stolen money and a stolen child," I said, my voice breaking for the first time. "I raised you better, Sebastian. I thought I did. But you chose her, and you chose greed."

The clock on the wall struck eleven-forty-five. In fifteen minutes, the world would know the truth. But I had one more move to make, one more revelation that would seal their fate and protect my granddaughter.

I pulled out my phone and dialed a number I hadn't called in years. The voice that answered was gruff, familiar. "Kensington. I've been expecting your call."

"It's time," I said, my eyes on Sebastian's pale face. "Bring the package. And tell the authorities to stand by."

I hung up, and the silence in the room was suffocating. Chloe was crying now, ugly, ragged sobs that echoed her fall from grace. Sebastian stood frozen, a statue of his own making.

But I wasn't done. The hardest part was yet to come.
