Previously: A snobbish director humiliates a blue-collar father and his little girl. But when the father presses his grease-stained palm to a gold pillar, the rotunda’s secrets unfold—and nothing will ever be the same.

The Gray-Suited Director’s Cufflinks Glinted Under the Chandelier

The next morning, Julian walked into the rotunda with Sophie by his side. The emerald wall was still active, his portrait glowing behind the velvet ropes. The directors were already seated, but the gray-suited man—Marcus Hale, the CFO—was conspicuously absent.

Julian didn’t need to wait long. Marcus appeared at the top of the staircase, his smile too wide, his steps too confident. “Founder Thorne, what a pleasure to finally meet you in person.”

Julian didn’t return the smile. “Where were you yesterday, Marcus?”

Marcus waved a hand. “A prior engagement. I heard you made quite the entrance.”

Sophie tugged at Julian’s sleeve. “Daddy, he’s the man from the video.”

Julian looked at her. “What video?”

Sophie pulled out her lunchbox, opened it, and revealed a small tablet. “I recorded everything yesterday. When the man threw the rag at you. When you pressed your hand on the pillar. And when he—the gray man—was on the phone with Lawrence last night.”

She pressed play. The audio was grainy, but the voices were clear. “You need to get rid of him, Lawrence. If the founder finds out about the offshore accounts, we’re both finished.”

Marcus’s face went pale. “That’s… that’s doctored.”

Julian took the tablet, his expression unreadable. “Sophie, how did you get this?”

“I hid under the table in the boardroom,” she said quietly. “When you went to the bathroom, he came in and made a call. I recorded it on your phone.”

Julian looked at Marcus, then at the directors, then back at Sophie. “You did this?”

Sophie nodded, her hazel eyes fierce. “He was mean to you, Daddy. Nobody’s mean to you.”

Marcus took a step back. “This is absurd. I’m the CFO. I have more shares than anyone—”

“Not anymore,” Julian said. He turned to Viktor. “Seize his assets. Freeze his accounts. And call the SEC.”

Marcus lunged forward, but Viktor intercepted him, pinning his arms behind his back. “You can’t do this! I built this company!”

Julian walked toward him, his voice low. “You built it on the backs of workers you stole from. Workers like me—the ones you thought were too dumb to notice.”

Marcus was dragged out, screaming threats that faded into the rotunda’s echo.

Julian knelt beside Sophie, his hands on her shoulders. “You know what you did was dangerous, right?”

Sophie looked down. “I know. But I couldn’t let him hurt you.”

Julian pulled her into a hug, his eyes glistening. “You’re the bravest person I know.”

The directors watched in silence, some of them wiping their eyes.

Later that day, Julian held a press conference. Standing beside him, Sophie clutched her lunchbox as he announced a new policy: every Shaw Global employee would receive a 30% raise, and a new hotline would be established for reporting abuse.

“I spent three years as a welder in my own shipyard,” Julian said. “I saw the way management treats the people who build our dreams. That ends today.”

The crowd erupted in applause. Sophie beamed.

As they walked away, Sophie tugged at his sleeve. “Daddy, can I come back to work with you tomorrow?”

Julian laughed. “You already have a job, sweetheart. You’re my chief of security.”

Sophie giggled. “Does that mean I get to fire mean people?”

Julian shook his head, smiling. “No, but you can always tell me who they are.”

And in that moment, the rotunda’s lights flickered one last time, as if the building itself was applauding the little girl who had saved it from the sharks.

Sometimes the bravest thing you can do is speak up—especially when the person you’re protecting is the one who thinks they have to protect you.
