The Unwelcome Guests

The morning sun filtered weakly through the dusty windows of the Highway 9 Diner, casting long shadows across the faded cream-colored vinyl booths. Raymond sat quietly in his usual spot, his calloused hands wrapped around a warm mug of black coffee. At seventy-four, he preferred the quiet hours of the morning, a time when he could think without the noise of the modern world intruding. Resting against the edge of the table was his sturdy wooden cane, its handle worn smooth from years of loyal support.

The peaceful atmosphere shattered when the diner’s heavy glass door swung open. A burst of cold wind and the smell of exhaust accompanied a group of burly men clad in dark denim and leather vests. At the front of the pack was Duke, a towering, bearded biker whose loud laughter immediately dominated the small diner. The other patrons lowered their heads, hoping to remain unnoticed, but Duke’s eyes scanned the room, looking for a target.

His gaze locked onto Raymond. With a mocking grin, Duke swaggered over to the booth. Without a word of warning, he snatched Raymond’s wooden cane from the table. Duke twirled it clumsily, mimicking a frail walk while his crew chuckled loudly in the background.

"What's the matter, old timer? Lose your training wheels?" Duke sneered.

Raymond remained entirely still, his stoic face betraying no fear. As Duke turned to leave, his elbow deliberately clipped Raymond’s water glass, sending it crashing to the floor. Water splashed across the table, but Raymond didn't even flinch. He slowly reached into his navy blue shirt pocket and pulled out an old flip phone. He dialed a single number and held it to his ear. When the call connected, his voice was cold and steady.

"It's me," Raymond said, pausing as he watched Duke's retreating back. "Bring 'em."
