As Rachel lay gasping on the grass, Charles scrambled down the steps to help his mother. Frances was whimpering, clutching her arm, but as Charles reached to pull her from the bushes, a thick, white envelope fell from her green cardigan pocket. Rachel, coughing as she struggled to her feet, pointed a trembling finger at the paper. "Look at it, Charles! Look at what she was trying to burn!" she screamed, her voice hoarse from the fall.

Charles paused, looking from his sobbing mother to his bruised wife. Reluctantly, he picked up the envelope. It was postmarked from a prestigious medical lab, addressed to him, but it had been opened and heavily taped shut. Inside was a DNA paternity test and a medical report from five years ago—the year their son, Leo, was born. Leo had been diagnosed with a rare genetic condition, and Charles had always believed he was the carrier. But the official documents in his hands stated otherwise. Charles was not the carrier; Frances had forged the medical records to make it seem like Rachel's side of the family was to blame, protecting her own family's medical history while driving a wedge between her son and daughter-in-law.

But that wasn't the worst of it. Attached to the report was a bank statement showing that Frances had been systematically draining Leo's medical trust fund—money Charles's late father had left for the boy's treatments. Rachel had caught Frances in the backyard trying to burn the evidence, which led to the confrontation on the porch.
