Previously: When Amy’s husband handed her a brown envelope during a dinner party, she knew their marriage was over. But she never expected the secret hidden inside the documents.

The Secret in the Files

I sat in the driver's seat of my car, the engine idling as the heater struggled to warm the freezing night air. Tears finally spilled over my eyelashes, hot and angry. I ripped open the metal clasp of the brown envelope, expecting to see standard separation agreements. Mark had always been calculated, but I wasn't prepared for the sheer depth of his betrayal.

As I flipped through the pages, my eyes caught a series of bank statements. They weren't just our joint accounts; they were private ledger sheets from a business account Mark had set up in secret. Over the past eighteen months, tens of thousands of dollars had been systematically transferred out of our savings. My stomach sickened as I traced the destination of those funds.

The recipient wasn't an offshore account or a bad investment. Every single transfer went directly to an account owned by Sarah—my best friend, the very woman who had been standing in our kitchen just moments ago, pretending to be a sympathetic bystander.

A small, handwritten note was tucked behind the bank statements. It was in Sarah's neat, looping cursive. "Once she signs the release for the house, we can finally announce the new partnership. Just hold on a little longer."

They weren't just pushing me out of my marriage; they were trying to steal the equity of the home my parents had helped us buy, leaving me with nothing while they built a new life together. Mark's words echoed in my head: "Everything's clear through the end of the month." He had paid off the utilities and the basic expenses to keep me quiet long enough to sign away my rights.

But they had severely underestimated me. I wiped my face, put the car in gear, and drove straight to the office of the best forensic accountant in the city. It was time to turn their little game upside down.
