The Confrontation

The shadows of the Iron Phantoms fell over Leo like a sudden eclipse. Marcus stepped out of his booth, his towering frame casting a long shadow across the checkered tiles. He walked slowly, intentionally, each boot heel striking the floor with a terrifying, rhythmic thud. The rest of the gang formed a human wall around Leo’s booth, blocking any hope of escape.

Leo swallowed hard, slowly setting his burger down on the paper wrapper. His hands were shaking so violently that a stray french fry rolled off the plate.

"Look, guys, I don't want any trouble,"

Leo stammered, raising his hands in a defensive gesture.

"Lily, tell your brother to back off. Whatever you think I did, it’s not what it looks like."

Lily stepped forward, her hands shoved deep into the pockets of her brown hoodie. Her eyes, once filled with warmth and love for the man she had planned to marry, were now ice-cold.

"You stole my father's life savings, Leo,"

Lily said, her voice echoing in the quiet diner.

"You took the money meant for my sister’s cancer treatment and used it to buy yourself a ticket out of this country. Did you really think I wouldn't find out?"

Leo tried to force a laugh, but it came out as a pathetic squeak.

"You don't have proof of that! It was a business investment that went bad. You can't prove a thing!"

Marcus slammed his massive, tattooed fist onto the laminate table. The ketchup bottles rattled, and Leo jumped a foot in the air.

"We don't need a courtroom to know you're a thief,"

Marcus growled, leaning in close enough for Leo to smell the leather and tobacco on him.

"But as it turns out, we do have proof. Show him, Lily."

Lily pulled her hand out of her pocket, holding a small silver flash drive.
