Previously: At her husband's rainy funeral, Victoria is shattered when her young daughter runs to the grave clutching a mysterious wooden box—revealing a devastating secret that changes everything.

The Battle at the Grave

Before Victoria could process the ghostly whisper of her late husband, Richard was already upon them. He grabbed Ava’s muddy arm, his fingers digging in with unnecessary force as he tried to wrench the wooden chest from her grasp. 'This belongs to the estate, Victoria!' he snapped, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and sheer panic. 'The child has no right to Arthur's personal effects!'

Victoria’s maternal instincts flared. She lunged forward, fiercely pulling Ava behind her and forcing Richard to let go. 'Get your hands off my daughter!' she hissed, her voice dripping with venom. 'What is wrong with you? We are standing at his grave!'

Richard straightened his dark grey suit, though he could not hide the tremor in his hands. 'Arthur was in deep debt to the firm, Victoria,' he whispered, leaning close so the other mourners wouldn't hear. 'If you want to keep your house, you will hand over that box. There are proprietary designs in there that belong to the company. If you refuse, I will ruin you.'

Ava whimpered, clutching Victoria’s coat. Victoria looked down at the open wooden chest in her daughter's arms. Amidst the mud-spattered ivory chess pieces, she noticed something unusual. The white queen piece had a small, almost invisible seam. Recalling the voice she had just heard, Victoria picked up the queen and twisted it. With a soft click, the top of the piece unscrewed, revealing a tiny, intricate silver key hidden inside.

Richard’s face drained of all color. 'Don't do this, Victoria,' he warned, his voice dropping to a desperate plea. 'Some secrets are meant to stay buried. If you open that, you will destroy Arthur’s memory forever. You don't know who he really was.'

Ignoring his threats, Victoria took the tiny key and inserted it into the small, hidden keyhole at the very bottom of the wooden chest. With a heavy click, a false bottom popped open, revealing a thick envelope and a small, high-tech digital voice recorder.
