Why I Lied to the Police Officer While My Husband Smiled From the Shadows
Previously: When Officer Mark stopped me on that dark street, my husband stood watching under a flickering light. One wrong word, and I would lose everything—so I lied to save myself.
The Trap Closes
Officer Mark frowned, his eyes darting between Sarah's terrified expression and the silent figure standing under the streetlamp. He knew something was deeply wrong, but without a direct plea for help, his hands were tied. With a slow, reluctant nod, he stepped back into his cruiser and drove away, the red taillights disappearing into the gloom.
The moment the cruiser vanished, David’s unsettling smile evaporated. He stepped out of the shadows, his face twisting into a mask of pure fury. He marched over to Sarah, his hand clamping down on her arm with a grip like iron. "You made the right choice, Sarah," he hissed, his voice a low, venomous whisper. "But you shouldn't have run."
He dragged her back to the house, ignoring her quiet pleas. Inside, the heavy front door clicked shut, and the deadbolt slid into place with a terrifying finality. David threw her onto the living room floor, where she lay shivering, staring up at the man she had once loved.
David pulled a stack of papers from his coat pocket and tossed them onto the table alongside a pen and a glass of water. "You are going to sign these custody papers tonight," he sneered. "I’ve spent months slipping those sedatives into your tea, making everyone believe you’re losing your mind. Once you sign, you'll take a very long sleep, and I will have full custody of Lily and your father's estate."
Sarah stared at the glass of water, realizing with horror that it was laced with a lethal dose. He was going to frame her suicide. "Please, David," she begged, tears streaming down her face. "Don't do this. Let me see Lily."
He grabbed her hair, forcing her hand around the pen. "No one is coming to save you, Sarah. Sign it."
