Previously: When Arthur's loyal golden retriever jumped into his casket and began barking at the sky, the mourners were horrified. But the dog wasn't mourning—he was trying to expose a killer.

The Secret in the Lining

Julian’s face flushed with anger as the dog’s barking intensified, echoing through the chilly twilight.

"Get that beast out of there!"
he hissed, stepping forward and reaching into the casket to grab Buster by the collar. But the moment Julian’s hand drew near, Buster spun around, baring his teeth with a vicious growl that shocked Clara. Buster had never growled at anyone in his life, let alone with such raw, territorial hostility. It was as if the dog recognized an enemy.

Clara stepped between them, her protective instincts kicking in.

"Don't touch him, Julian! Look at him—he’s trying to tell us something,"
she insisted, her eyes tracking the dog’s frantic movements. She could see the sheer panic in Julian's eyes, a look that didn't belong at a peaceful funeral.

Buster turned back to the interior of the casket. Instead of barking, he began to frantically scratch at the silk lining near Arthur's right hand. The dog’s sharp claws tore through the delicate fabric, revealing a small, stiff piece of cardboard hidden beneath the padded layer. Clara’s heart hammered against her ribs. She reached into the tear, her fingers brushing against a thick, sealed envelope that had been deliberately concealed inside the casket lining before it left the funeral home.

Julian lunged forward, his polite facade completely slipping.

"Clara, stop this madness! This is highly disrespectful to your father's memory. Give that to me,"
he demanded, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and panic. But Thomas, the lawyer, stepped in, placing a firm hand on Julian's shoulder.
"Let her open it, Julian. If Arthur left something behind, his daughter has every right to see it,"
Thomas declared coolly.

With trembling hands, Clara tore open the envelope. Inside was a hand-written letter from Arthur, dated just the night before his sudden "heart attack," along with a small USB flash drive. As Clara’s eyes scanned the first few lines of her father's handwriting, the blood drained from her face. Her father hadn't died of natural causes, and his loyal dog had been the sole witness to a terrible crime.
