The heavy silence that followed Richard’s threat was suffocating. Rachel slowly lowered her hands, her gaze lingering on Emma’s pregnant belly with a mixture of profound sorrow and longing before she turned and fled down the corridor, the sound of her heels clicking rapidly against the tile until she vanished into the lobby. Richard exhaled a shaky breath, the rigid tension in his shoulders finally breaking as he knelt down to help Emma to her feet.

"Are you alright, sweetheart? Did she hurt you?" he asked, his voice instantly softening into the warm, familiar tone Emma had known her entire life.

Emma brushed her crumpled pink dress down, her mind spinning. She looked into the eyes of the man she had always called 'Uncle.' He had been her legal guardian since she was five years old, after a tragic car accident supposedly claimed both of her parents. Or so she had been told.

"I'm fine," Emma stammered, holding her stomach. "But Richard... what did you just say to her? You called me your granddaughter. Why would you say that? And who is she?"

Richard’s face grew incredibly pale. He looked around the empty hotel hallway, suddenly looking much older than his fifty-eight years. He closed his eyes, realizing that the lie he had carefully constructed for two decades was crumbling to dust in a single, emotionally charged moment.

"We can't talk here," Richard whispered, gently taking her arm. "Let's go to my suite. It's time I told you the truth about your mother."

Upstairs, behind closed doors, Richard poured himself a glass of water with trembling hands. He sat opposite Emma and took a deep breath. He confessed that Rachel was not a stranger, nor was she a threat to Emma's safety. She was Emma's biological mother. Twenty years ago, Rachel had struggled with severe postpartum depression and addiction, ultimately deciding she could not raise Emma. But the biggest shock was yet to come: Richard was not her uncle.
