For a long moment, the only sound in the kitchen was the ticking of the wall clock. Lorna’s hands began to tremble, her fingers desperately gripping the edge of the kitchen counter. She tried to force a laugh, but it came out as a desperate, choked gasp. She looked at Richard, trying to find any sign of a joke in his cold, steel-grey eyes.

"Richard, what on earth are you talking about?" she stammered, her voice rising in pitch. "That’s not funny. You’re scaring the kids!"

Richard didn't flinch. He slowly opened the yellow envelope and pulled out a stack of medical documents. He tossed them onto the kitchen island, right next to the plates of warm food she had prepared for her children.

"These are paternity tests, Lorna," Richard said, his voice steady but laced with a deep, agonizing pain. "For all three of them. I had my suspicions after I saw those text messages on your old iPad last month. But I wanted to be sure. It turns out, not a single one of your children shares my DNA."

Lorna’s face flushed red, then turned an ashen grey. The truth was out. For ten years, she had been living a double life, using Richard’s successful career to fund a lavish lifestyle for herself and her children, all while secretly maintaining a relationship with her high school sweetheart. She had assumed Richard was too busy, too trusting, and too blind to ever notice.

But her biggest mistake was her cruelty toward Leo. Leo was Richard's biological son from his first marriage, and Lorna had treated him like an unwanted guest ever since she moved in. She had starved him of affection, and now, she had literally tried to starve him of food.

"Get your things, Lorna," Richard ordered, pointing toward the door. "You and your children have one hour to pack. My lawyer has already filed the paperwork."
