Previously: When a grieving ten-year-old girl handed Sarah a mysterious wooden box outside a lavish mansion, she had no idea it held a secret that would shatter her family's wealthy facade forever.

The Secret in the Snow

Margaret marched forward, her expensive leather boots crunching loudly on the frozen gravel. Her usual poised demeanor had vanished, replaced by a desperate, panicked urgency. "Sarah, give that box to me this instant," she demanded, her voice shaking despite her attempt to sound authoritative. "And call security to have this vagrant child removed from the property."

Sarah stood her ground, stepping protectively in front of the little girl, whose name was Lily.

"No, Mother,"
Sarah said, her voice steadying as a cold realization began to wash over her.
"This is Emily's locket. I would know it anywhere. Why does this child have it?"

With a racing heart, Sarah reached back into the box and pulled out a folded, yellowed piece of paper beneath the velvet lining. She unfolded it with trembling fingers, recognizing the elegant, hurried cursive of her sister, Emily, who had allegedly died in a tragic car accident ten years ago. As Sarah read the words, the world around her seemed to spin.

The letter was addressed to Sarah. In it, Emily revealed the horrifying truth: she hadn't died in an accident. Margaret had discovered Emily was pregnant out of wedlock and, obsessed with preserving the family's pristine social standing, had sent her away to a remote clinic. Margaret had forced Emily to give up her baby, telling her the child had died at birth, while telling Sarah that Emily had perished in a crash. But Emily had discovered the truth before she actually passed away from illness years laterβ€”her daughter was alive, raised in a harsh orphanage, and she had instructed her trusted friend to send the girl to Sarah when she was old enough.

Sarah looked from the letter to the shivering girl, then to her mother, whose eyes were darting around in sheer terror. "You lied to me," Sarah whispered, tears of fury stinging her eyes. "You threw Emily away, and you tried to erase her daughter."
