A Young Boy Entered My Bank With a Cash Bag and a Secret
A Strange Customer
It was a quiet Tuesday morning at the Metropolitan Trust Bank, the kind of slow day where the hum of the air conditioner was the loudest sound in the lobby. Amanda, a seasoned teller in her early thirties, was busy organizing deposit slips behind her polished white quartz counter. She enjoyed the predictable rhythm of her job, but that predictability was about to vanish forever when the heavy glass doors swung open.
A young boy, no older than ten, walked in alone. He wore an oversized green hoodie with the hood pulled down, exposing a mop of messy brown hair. He looked nervous, his eyes darting around the bright, modern lobby before locking onto Amanda’s station. What caught Amanda's attention was the heavy brown zippered sports bag he was dragging. The weight of it seemed almost too much for his small frame, forcing him to lean to one side as he approached her counter.
Amanda leaned forward, her face softening into a warm, reassuring smile. She assumed he was waiting for a parent or perhaps carrying a bag of loose change from a piggy bank.
"Hello sweetheart, are you here with an adult?"she asked gently, hoping to make him feel safe.
The boy stopped, taking a deep breath. With a burst of effort, he hoisted the heavy bag up onto the high quartz counter. He looked up at her with serious, hazel eyes.
"No ma'am, I came alone. I want to open a savings account,"he replied, his voice steady despite his young age.
Amanda smiled, reaching for a standard new-account brochure.
"Of course we can do that. Do you have some savings you've been collecting?"she asked.
Without a word, the boy reached for the zipper of the heavy sports bag. He pulled it back, revealing the contents. Amanda’s breath caught in her throat. Her friendly smile instantly froze, then melted into absolute, staggering shock. Neatly packed inside the bag were thick, banded stacks of crisp hundred-dollar bills. There was easily over a hundred thousand dollars sitting right in front of her. Her eyes widened, and she gasped aloud, looking around the empty lobby.
"Oh my god. Where did this money come from?"she whispered, her heart racing.
