The Legend in the Canvas Jacket

The heat of the Nevada desert was relentless, baking the dusty shooting range under a harsh, unforgiving sun. Thomas, a rugged sixty-seven-year-old veteran with cropped grey hair and a weathered face, walked slowly toward the registration counter. He wore a simple, dark brown canvas jacket, looking more like a retired rancher than a competitor. But beneath that quiet exterior lay a lifetime of secrets.

As Thomas reached for the sign-up sheet, a shadow fell over the table. It was Leo, a twenty-nine-year-old soldier built like a tank, wearing a black tactical shirt and a dark military cap. Leo was the base's golden boy, a reigning champion who had never known defeat. He looked down at Thomas with a smug, mocking smile.

"Are you here to compete? Or to beg for alms?"

Leo’s voice carried across the range, drawing chuckles from the younger soldiers gathered nearby. Thomas didn't flinch. Instead, he calmly pulled back his sleeve to sign his name. The movement revealed a faded black tattoo on his forearm—a wolf's head, stark and menacing. Leo laughed dismissively, folding his arms. "Go home, old-timer. This range is for real soldiers."

Without a word, Thomas picked up his old scoped rifle. He stepped to the firing line, aiming at a target set at an extreme, near-impossible distance. The wind howled, kicking up dust. Leo smirked, expecting a humiliating failure. But Thomas didn't even hesitate. He aligned his sights and fired a single shot.

"I only need one shot," Thomas said calmly.

The range went dead silent as the digital monitor updated. A perfect bullseye. Leo’s jaw dropped, his face turning pale. "What? Impossible!" he stammered. An older officer nearby stepped forward, staring at Thomas's forearm in absolute terror. "That is the mark of the ghost unit," the officer whispered. A single tear of shock and humiliation rolled down Leo's cheek as he realized the monumentality of his mistake.
