Previously: When an arrogant young soldier mocks a 67-year-old veteran at a desert shooting range, he expects an easy win. But one legendary shot reveals a secret that changes everything.

A Desperate Mission

The stunned silence at the shooting range was broken by the arrival of General Vance, the base commander. He ignored Leo entirely, walking straight to Thomas and offering a crisp, respectful salute. The younger soldiers watched in utter disbelief as the General spoke in a low, urgent tone.

"Sir, we have an emergency. A highly classified prototype tracking device was stolen from our secure vault three hours ago. The thieves are hiding in the treacherous red canyons nearby."

General Vance explained that the canyon was a blind spot for satellite surveillance, and any standard military squad would be spotted instantly. They needed a "ghost"—someone who could slip through the shadows undetected. Eager to redeem himself after his public humiliation, Leo stepped forward, his arrogance replaced by desperate ambition.

"Let me go with him, General! I can prove myself out there," Leo pleaded.

Thomas looked at the young soldier, seeing the fear hiding behind his eyes. "He can come," Thomas said quietly. "But only if he follows my orders without question." Within thirty minutes, the two men were deep in the scorching canyons, tracking footprints in the dry sand. Leo's high-tech gear felt heavy and useless in the brutal terrain, while Thomas moved like a shadow, silent and perfectly attuned to the environment.

Suddenly, the silence was shattered by the crack of a high-caliber rifle. A bullet kicked up dust inches from Leo’s boots. "Sniper!" Leo screamed, panicking as he scrambled behind a boulder. His training had prepared him for structured drills, not a real-world ambush. He was frozen, his rifle shaking violently in his hands.

Thomas remained calm, his eyes scanning the canyon walls. He spotted the sniper's glint high up on a ridge. There was only one way to neutralize the threat, but it required a decoy. Thomas looked at the terrified young soldier. "I need you to draw his fire," Thomas commanded. "If you move to the left ridge, he will shoot. That will give me the three seconds I need to take him out. Do you trust me?"
