Act 1: The Storm Outside

The rain lashed against the glass of the Midnight Harbor Cafe, blurring the neon lights of the coastal highway. Inside, eighteen-year-old Levi wiped down the polished wooden counter, his mind drifting. It was a slow Tuesday night, and the only sound was the low hum of the espresso machine and the rhythmic drumming of the storm outside. Levi was saving every penny for college, enduring the long shifts and the constant scrutiny of his manager, Timothy.

Suddenly, a shadow fell across the window. Levi stopped wiping and looked up. A man in a battered leather jacket, his face bruised and pale, collapsed heavily against the glass. He slid down, leaving a smear of rainwater and blood on the window pane. Levi's heart hammered in his chest.

"Don't get involved. We have customers," Timothy's cold voice cut through the silence.

Timothy stood near the register, his arms crossed, a look of utter disgust on his face. He didn't care about the man outside; he only cared about the cafe's image.

"Something's wrong with him," Levi said, his voice shaking.

Before Timothy could stop him, Levi dropped his rag and sprinted toward the door. He burst into the freezing downpour, the rain instantly soaking through his thin uniform shirt. He knelt on the wet asphalt beside the shivering man.

"Sir? Can you hear me?" Levi asked, gently touching the man's shoulder.

The man groaned, his eyes fluttering open.

"I'm okay,"
he whispered, though his trembling body suggested otherwise. Levi reached into his pocket and pulled out a small bottle of water he had grabbed from the counter.
"Take some water,"
Levi urged, helping him sit up. The man took a weak sip.
"Thank you. Thank you,"
he whispered.
"Stay with me,"
Levi pleaded, looking around for help.

At the open doorway of the cafe, Timothy appeared, his face twisted in anger.

"Get back inside!"
he yelled over the roar of the wind. Levi looked back, pleading,
"He needs help!"
Timothy didn't hesitate.
"Then you're fired,"
he snapped, slamming the door shut. Levi was stunned, but as he looked down, the bruised stranger looked up at him with deep gratitude.
"When nobody else would,"
the man whispered. Timothy sneered from behind the glass, mouthing, "Not my problem." Slowly, the stranger pulled a sleek phone from his pocket. He dialed a number and spoke with sudden authority:
"Yeah. I'm outside Midnight Harbor Cafe."
