Cast Out into the Cold

The gravel of the neoclassical mansion’s driveway bit into Olivia’s bare feet, but the physical discomfort was nothing compared to the searing humiliation radiating from her chest. At twenty-nine years old, and six months pregnant with their miracle baby, she stood amidst her scattered silk dresses and designer coats, weeping openly. Above her on the grand stone steps stood Richard, the man she had loved for seven years, holding her final suitcase.

"You don't belong here anymore, Olivia," Richard sneered, his voice dripping with malice as he flung the heavy leather bag down the stairs. It burst open, spilling her personal belongings across the pavement.

Standing beside him, draped in a bright pink dress that screamed of triumph, was Sarah. The younger woman didn't hide her smirk, wrapping her arm tightly around Richard’s waist. They looked like the undisputed king and queen of the estate, while two estate security guards watched silently from the shadows, ordered not to intervene.

Richard called out mockingly, "Olivia, make sure you don't leave your trash behind. We have a new lady of the house now."

The laughter that followed from the couple cut deep. Olivia's hands shook as she knelt in the dirt, her fingers frantically searching through the mess until they wrapped around her phone. Sobbing, she unlocked it and dialed the one person she had avoided calling out of pride.

"Dad, come get me," Olivia whispered, her voice cracking but instantly hardening. "And Dad? Bring the legal."

Richard and Sarah exchanged a mocking glance, laughing louder. But their amusement was cut short. Within minutes, the roar of powerful engines echoed down the valley. Two massive black SUVs charged up the driveway, halting with a deafening screech of tires right in front of the steps, their headlights glaring like predatory eyes in the warm golden hour sun.
