He Laughed When I Fell, but Had No Idea Who Helped Me Up
The cold autumn drizzle had left the city sidewalks slick and unforgiving. Chloe clutched her folder tightly to her chest, her mind racing with anxiety about her upcoming bills. Wearing her favorite red fleece jacket, she hurried past a gray concrete wall, her boots losing traction on a patch of wet moss. In an instant, the world tilted. Chloe slipped, landing hard on the damp concrete. The impact knocked the wind out of her, and her papers scattered into the puddles.
Before she could even process the pain, a harsh wave of laughter cut through the misty air. Standing just a few feet away was Jake, her ex-fiancé, wearing a casual grey hoodie. Instead of reaching out a hand, he pointed and laughed. His friends quickly joined in. One shouted, "Woo! Look at her!" while another jeered, "And she wiped out."
Chloe felt a hot tear of humiliation mix with the rain on her cheek. This was the man who had promised to love her forever, yet here he was, treating her pain like a cheap street performance.
Suddenly, a shadow fell over her. Luke, a tall, bearded man in a rugged black canvas jacket, rushed forward. He knelt beside her, his eyes filled with genuine concern.
"Hey, you okay? Easy, easy, let me help you up. You good?"
he asked gently, shielding her from the mockery. Chloe replied softly,
"Yeah."
Luke told her,
"All right, stay right here,"
his voice steady and protective. He turned his gaze toward the laughing group, his eyes narrowing into a fierce glare. Walking toward Jake, Luke demanded,
"Is that how you treat people?"
