The next morning, the sun finally broke through the clouds, casting a bright light over the sleek, glass-walled boardroom of Vanguard Enterprises. Jake adjusted his tie in the mirror, feeling entirely confident. He had polished his resume, rehearsed his answers, and was certain this executive position was his for the taking.
When the secretary called his name, Jake walked into the boardroom with a broad, practiced smile. But the moment his eyes landed on the man sitting at the head of the mahogany table, his smile froze.
Sitting there, looking impeccably sharp in a tailored suit, was Luke—the bearded man from the damp sidewalk.
"Welcome, Jake,"
Luke said, his voice dripping with cold authority.
"Please, take a seat."
Jake swallowed hard, his face turning pale.
"You... you're the CEO?"
he stammered, his confidence evaporating instantly.
"I am,"
Luke replied calmly.
"And before we begin, I want to introduce you to our new Department Coordinator, who will be assisting me with this hiring process."
Luke gestured to the door. It opened, and Chloe walked in. She was no longer wearing the wet red fleece jacket; instead, she wore a professional blazer, her head held high and her eyes shining with newfound confidence.
Jake stared in utter disbelief.
"Chloe? What is this?"
"This is a lesson in character, Jake,"
Luke said, leaning forward.
"At Vanguard, we don't just hire resumes. We hire human beings. And yesterday, you showed me exactly who you are when you think nobody important is watching. You mock the fallen, and you abandon those in need. You are disqualified. You can leave now."
With his head bowed in shame, Jake gathered his things and left the room, his career aspirations ruined by his own cruelty. Chloe looked at Luke, a tear of gratitude in her eye, knowing her life had finally changed for the better.
True strength is not found in pushing others down to make yourself look tall, but in reaching out a hand to lift them up when they fall.
