A Terrified Teenager Corners Himself in an Alley to Protect a Dark Family Secret
The Chase in the Snow
The bitter winter wind howled through the narrow, red-brick alleyways of the city, carrying with it a biting chill that penetrated deep into Zoe’s bones. Clutching her yellow windbreaker tightly around her, she sprinted across the slick, frozen pavement. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. She had to reach him first. Just ahead, the screech of tires echoed through the quiet street. A white pickup truck swerved to an abrupt halt, blocking the exit of the alley. A man leaned out of the window, his face contorted in anger as he shouted,
"Hey! No! Get back here!"
Zoe’s foot caught on a patch of black ice. She slipped, her hands scraping against the freezing ground as she desperately tried to regain her balance. Through the flurry of falling snow, she saw them. Mitch, a burly man clad in a heavy brown canvas work jacket and a black beanie, was leading a squad of tough-looking men down the street. Their faces were grim, their eyes scanning every shadow with predatory intensity. They weren't going to stop until they found what they were looking for.
Hidden behind a stack of wooden pallets, pressed tightly against the cold brick wall, was Lucas. The sandy-haired teenager shook uncontrollably, his green varsity jacket offering little protection against the elements. Tears of pure terror welled in his eyes as he stared at the approaching shadows.
"No, no, please no,"he whispered under his breath, his voice cracking with fear. He was trapped. One of Mitch’s men suddenly stopped, pointing a gloved finger toward the narrow alcove.
"He's over here!"he called out. Mitch didn't hesitate, his deep voice barking an order that chilled Lucas to the bone:
"Keep moving. Don't let him slip away."Lucas closed his eyes, bracing himself for the worst as the heavy footsteps drew closer.
