The Confrontation in the Cold

Before Mitch’s men could corner the terrified boy, Zoe threw herself into the alleyway, standing directly between her younger brother and the oncoming group. "Stay away from him, Mitch!" she screamed, her voice trembling but resolute. She stood tall, despite her scraped palms and the sheer intimidation of the men facing her. Mitch halted, his heavy boots crunching on the packed snow. The rest of his crew stopped behind him, waiting for his signal.

Mitch sighed, a cloud of white vapor escaping his lips. He looked at Zoe not with malice, but with a weary frustration.

"Zoe, you don't understand what's happening here. Step aside. We are trying to help him,"

Mitch said, his voice surprisingly calm despite his gruff exterior. Zoe scoffed, stepping backward until her hand found Lucas’s trembling shoulder.

"Help him? You brought a squad of men to hunt him down like an animal! He's just a kid, Mitch. He has nothing to do with your debts!"

The men behind Mitch exchanged uneasy glances. Lucas finally spoke up, his voice cracking.

"It's not about the money, Zoe,"

he confessed, looking down at the snow. Zoe turned to her brother, confused.

"What do you mean? Mom said Mitch was in trouble with these people!"

Lucas shook his head, tears spilling over his cold cheeks.

"No, Mom lied to you. I found the documents in the attic. Mitch isn't the one in debt. It was Mom. She took out loans in my name using my identity, and Mitch has been secretly paying them off for months. I ran away because I couldn't bear to look at either of them after I found out."
