A Terrified Teenager Corners Himself in an Alley to Protect a Dark Family Secret
Previously: When Lucas fled into a freezing alleyway, he thought he was entirely alone. But his sister Zoe was willing to risk everything to stop the men hunting him.
A Family Redeemed
Zoe’s hand slipped from Lucas’s shoulder as the weight of his words sank in. She looked at Mitch, whose tough exterior seemed to soften in the dim winter light. He hadn't been hunting Lucas to hurt him; he had gathered his closest friends from the construction site to search the freezing city streets before the boy froze to death or did something drastic.
"I didn't want you or Lucas to know the truth about your mother,"Mitch admitted quietly, stepping forward alone.
"I wanted to protect her reputation, and more importantly, I wanted to protect you two. But when Lucas ran off into this blizzard, I knew I couldn't keep secrets anymore."
Lucas stepped out from the shadow of the brick wall, his anger and fear dissolving into overwhelming relief. He threw his arms around Mitch, burying his face into the rough canvas of his stepfather's jacket. Mitch hugged the boy back tightly, patting his back with a large, gloved hand. Zoe watched them, a mixture of guilt and gratitude washing over her. She had spent months believing Mitch was the villain of their family story, only to realize he was the only one truly standing between them and ruin.
Taking a deep breath, Zoe stepped forward and joined the embrace, the cold city alley suddenly feeling a little warmer. They knew they had a long road ahead to address the betrayal of their mother, but for the first time, they were facing it together as a real family. Sometimes, the people we fear the most are the ones carrying the heaviest burdens just to keep us safe.
