A Terrified Boy Cornered in a Snowy Alley Unlocks a Dark Family Secret
The Coldest Chase
The bitter winter wind howled through the narrow alleyway, carrying with it the sharp scent of exhaust and incoming snow. Nora pressed her hand against the freezing red brick of the apartment building, her breath rising in ragged, white plumes. She had been tracking the white utility van for three blocks, her heart hammering against her ribs. But the icy ground was unforgiving. As she took a sudden turn, her boot lost traction. She slipped, tumbling hard onto the frozen asphalt, a sharp pain shooting through her knee.
From the end of the alley, a harsh voice sliced through the cold. "Hey! No!" a man shouted, the heavy slam of a car door echoing off the brick walls. Nora struggled to sit up, her red hair falling across her face. Through the flurry of snow, she saw them. Morgan, a towering figure in a brown leather bomber jacket and a black beanie, was leading a squad of tough, grim-faced men down the road. They moved with a terrifying, coordinated purpose.
Further down the alley, cornered against a rusted fire escape, was Luke. The blonde teenager looked incredibly small in his teal varsity jacket, his back pressed flat against the brick. His hands shook violently as he looked at the closing circle of men. "No, no," he whispered, his voice cracking with pure terror. He had nowhere left to run.
"He's over here!" one of Morgan's pursuers pointed eagerly, spotting the boy.
"Keep moving," Morgan commanded, his voice dripping with icy authority. He didn't want any distractions. He wanted Luke. Nora watched in horror as her younger brother remained trapped, his wide, tear-filled eyes darting around the dead-end alley. She had to get up. She had to save him before Morgan took him away forever.
