A Terrified Boy Cornered in a Snowy Alley Unlocks a Dark Family Secret
Previously: When Nora finds her teenage brother Luke cornered in a freezing alley by their ruthless uncle, a dark family secret is dragged into the light.
Standing in the Fire
Ignoring the throbbing pain in her knee, Nora scrambled to her feet. She lunged forward, throwing herself between Morgan’s advancing squad and her terrified brother. "Stay away from him, Morgan!" she screamed, her voice shaking but resolute. She spread her arms, shielding Luke, who was trembling so hard his teeth chattered against the cold.
Morgan stopped, a cruel, mocking smile spreading across his weathered face. He adjusted his black beanie and stepped closer, the snow crunching loudly beneath his heavy boots. "Get out of the way, Nora," he said quietly, though the threat in his voice was deafening. "This doesn't concern you. Luke has something that belongs to me, and I’m taking him home."
Luke grabbed the back of Nora's black puffer coat, his knuckles white. "Don't let him take me, Nora," he sobbed. "He’s the one. He’s the reason Dad’s shop burned down. I found the insurance files in his safe. He did it all for the payout, and he’s going to pin it on me!"
"You always were too smart for your own good, kid," Morgan sneered, taking another step forward. "But family secrets stay in the family. You're coming with us, one way or another."
Nora felt a chill run down her spine that had nothing to do with the winter weather. The fire that had ruined their family, the tragedy that had left them broke and desperate—it hadn't been an accident. It had been Morgan all along, their own uncle, playing the grieving relative while planning to sacrifice his own nephew to cover his tracks. The tough men behind Morgan stepped forward, ready to push Nora aside. She was outnumbered, outmatched, and trapped in a freezing alleyway with no help in sight.
