The heavy wooden double doors of the Dusty Spur tavern slammed open, letting in a blinding shaft of desert sunlight and a swirling cloud of grit. Leo, a twelve-year-old boy with disheveled brown hair and a jacket caked in dust, stumbled into the dim room. His chest heaved as his desperate eyes scanned the patrons. He didn't see the card players or the bartender; his eyes locked onto Marcus. Marcus was a mountain of a man, his shaved head catching the low amber light, his thick arms covered in faded tattoos that told stories of a violent past.

Leo sprinted across the creaking floorboards and grabbed the lapels of Marcus's heavy leather vest.

"Please. Help me," the boy pleaded, his voice cracking with sheer terror.

Marcus looked down at the small hands clutching his leather, his brow furrowing. His voice was a deep, gravelly rumble.

"Who's after you, kid?"
"They're coming," Leo panted, looking back at the door as if expecting monsters to tear through the wood. "They're right behind me."

Marcus leaned back slightly, his eyes narrowing as he scanned the empty road through the window.

"Why here? Out of all the places in this godforsaken desert, why did you run to my tavern?"

Leo looked up, tears finally spilling down his dusty cheeks.

"My father told me... he told me to come here if I was ever in trouble. He said you were the only one who could be trusted."

Marcus felt a cold chill run down his spine. He leaned in closer, his voice dropping to a whisper.

"What's your father's name, kid?"

Leo swallowed hard, whispering a name that made the air in the room turn to ice.

"John Wick."

Marcus froze. His breath hitched in his throat.

"No. That's impossible," Marcus muttered, his face turning pale.

Without another word, Marcus reached into his pocket and pressed a heavy, gold continental coin into Leo's small palm. The gold caught the light, a symbol of a world Marcus thought he had left behind. He stood up abruptly, his massive frame towering over the table, and roared toward the bar.

"Lock the doors! Now!"
