Previously: When a terrified twelve-year-old boy ran into a dusty roadside tavern pleading for help, a burly biker never expected the kid to utter a legendary name—or hand him a golden coin.

A Pledge Redeemed

The air exploded with gunfire. Marcus dived behind a thick wooden pillar as bullets shredded the rustic furniture. He returned fire, his shots precise and devastating. Two of the mercenaries fell instantly, but the leader, a scarred man in a tailored suit, breached the doorway, his weapon aimed directly at the bar where Leo was hiding.

In a desperate scramble, Marcus threw himself across the room, taking a bullet to the shoulder but tackling the leader to the floor. They wrestled for the weapon, the scarred man gaining the upper hand. He pressed his gun against Marcus's chest, a wicked grin spreading across his face.

"The Wick bloodline ends today," the man sneered.

Suddenly, a loud crack echoed through the tavern. The leader gasped, his eyes wide with shock, before collapsing sideways. Standing behind him, trembling but holding Marcus's spare pistol with both hands, was young Leo.

Silence fell over the tavern once more, save for the whistling desert wind. Marcus groaned, clutching his bleeding shoulder as he stood up. He looked at the young boy, who was staring at the gun in his hands, tears streaming down his face. Marcus gently took the weapon from Leo and pulled the boy into a tight, protective embrace.

"You're safe now, kid," Marcus whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "Your father knew I would protect you. And I will. To the very end."

Marcus knew that their quiet life in the desert was over. The High Table would eventually send more men, but they wouldn't be running anymore. Together, they would rebuild, train, and wait. As Marcus looked down at the golden coin glinting in Leo's hand, he realized that family wasn't just about blood; it was about the promises we keep to those who saved us.

True loyalty isn't measured in peace, but in the willingness to stand in the fire for the ones we love.
