The sun streamed through the high stained-glass windows of the wedding chapel, casting a warm, golden glow over the immaculate guests. Mark stood at the altar, looking at his bride, Vanessa, but his heart felt strangely hollow. Just as the priest cleared his throat to begin the vows, the heavy oak doors at the back of the chapel creaked open.

A tiny girl, no older than six, walked slowly down the aisle. She wore a faded lavender cardigan, her blonde curls disheveled, and her cheeks stained with fresh tears. In her small hands, she clutched a torn, crumpled photograph. The hushed whispers of the congregation rippled through the chapel as Vanessa gasped in horror.

Mark’s mother, Eleanor, immediately hissed to the security guards, "Get that child out of here!" But Mark was frozen. The girl stopped right at the foot of the altar, looking up at him with desperate, pleading eyes.

"I don't want money, please," she sobbed, her tiny shoulders shaking. "I just want my mom not to go to heaven."

Mark bypassed his bride and knelt on the cold stone floor.

"Who are you? Who sent you?" he asked, his voice cracking.
"Nobody," the girl cried. "I came because she's dying."
"What's your mother's name?" Mark whispered, a terrible dread settling in his chest.
"Johanda," she replied.

Mark’s breath hitched. "Johanda?"

"She kept your picture," Lily said, holding out the torn photo. It was a picture of Mark from college.

Without a second thought, Mark stood up, abandoned his wedding, and ran out of the church with Lily. They sped to the county hospital, where the sterile, cool-toned lights of the ICU offered a grim contrast to the warm chapel. Mark rushed to the bedside of a pale, frail woman.

"I'm here, I'm here. Why didn't you tell me?" he wept, clutching her cold hand.

Johanda opened her eyes weakly, whispering, "Because... she's not the only one."
