Mark looked at Johanda, whose breathing was growing shallower by the second, and then down at little Lily, who was trembling behind his legs. He realized that his mother’s power lay entirely in his submission. For his entire life, he had let Eleanor pull the strings, but that ended today.

Mark pulled out his phone, revealing a glowing red recording icon. He had quietly started recording the moment Eleanor walked in.

"I have your entire confession on tape, Eleanor," Mark said, his voice steady and cold. "The illegal adoption, the extortion, the threats. If you don't walk out of here right now, this recording goes straight to the federal authorities and the media. I will strip you of your position at the company, and I will make sure you spend your remaining years in a prison cell."

Eleanor’s face drained of color. The lawyers beside her exchanged panicked glances, realizing the legal nightmare they had just walked into. One of them whispered in Eleanor's ear, and with a final, hateful glare, she turned and swept out of the room.

Mark knelt beside Johanda, holding her hand as the monitor's beeps slowed.

"I promise you, Johanda," he whispered through his tears. "I will raise Lily and Leo together. They will know how much you loved them. I won't let anyone hurt them again."

A peaceful smile touched Johanda’s lips before she closed her eyes for the last time.
