An Unwelcome Visitor

The air inside the lobby of Vanguard Trust was always precisely seventy-two degrees, smelling faintly of expensive cedar and fresh lilies. Arthur adjusted his charcoal-gray jacket, smoothing the lapels as he surveyed his domain. To him, the polished white marble floors and towering glass columns were not just architecture; they were a fortress built to separate the worthy from the rest. As a senior private wealth manager, Arthur took pride in guarding the gates.

That morning, however, an intruder had breached the perimeter. Standing near the private elevator bay was an elderly woman who looked entirely out of place. She wore a faded forest green trench coat that hung loosely on her frail frame, and a dark knit beanie pulled low over her ears. She carried no designer handbag, only a small, worn leather pouch.

Arthur felt a surge of irritation. His most important client was arriving in less than ten minutes. Striding across the marble, his leather loafers clicking sharply, he intercepted her.

"You lost, ma'am?"

Arthur asked, his voice dripping with condescension. He didn't offer a smile.

"This wing is for private clients. People with accounts."

The woman did not flinch. She slowly turned her gaze to him, her pale blue eyes remarkably calm and steady. She didn't say a word. Instead, she took a deliberate step toward the restricted elevator panel, which glowed with a soft, pulsing purple light.

From her pocket, she pulled a sleek, metallic device no larger than a keycard and held it against the scanner. Arthur’s heart leaped into his throat.

"Wait, what is that?"

he demanded, stepping forward in panic to grab her arm. But before he could touch her, the panel beeped. On the receptionist's desk behind them, a laptop screen flashed red with an urgent override alert. The elderly woman turned back to Arthur, a faint, knowing smile playing on her lips.

"You should have let me in,"

she said softly.
