Previously: When a pompous private banker tries to throw a seemingly homeless elderly woman out of his exclusive lobby, a single scan of a mysterious device turns his world completely upside down.

The Corporate Penthouse

The elevator doors slid shut before Arthur could utter another word. He stood frozen, staring at the closed metal doors as the indicator light climbed rapidly to the penthouse suite. Behind him, the receptionist gasped. Arthur lunged for the desk, staring at the laptop screen. The red alert wasn't a warning of an external hack; it was an administrative override signed with a master security key. The name associated with the key made Arthur’s blood run cold: Eleanor Vance.

She was the matriarch of the Vance family, the primary shareholder who owned eighty percent of Vanguard Trust's parent company. She was a legend who rarely appeared in public, living a quiet life away from the cameras. Within three minutes, Arthur’s desk phone rang. It was the CEO's executive assistant, her voice trembling.

"Arthur, the board needs you in the penthouse boardroom immediately. Do not delay."

Arthur's legs felt like lead as he rode the elevator up. When he stepped into the penthouse, the silence was deafening. He walked down the corridor to the double mahogany doors. Inside, the bank's CEO, Richard Sterling, was standing awkwardly, pouring a cup of chamomile tea for the woman in the green trench coat.

She had removed her beanie, revealing a crown of elegant silver hair. Her coat was draped over the back of the leather chair, revealing a bespoke designer suit underneath.

"Ah, Arthur. Come in,"

Richard said, his face pale.

"Mrs. Vance was just telling me about her reception downstairs."
"Mrs. Vance, I am so incredibly sorry,"

Arthur stammered, his confidence evaporating.

"I was only trying to maintain the security of our private clients. I didn't realize—"
"You didn't realize who I was,"

Eleanor interrupted, her voice quiet but sharp as glass.

"You only show respect to those you think can do something for you. But that is not the only reason I am here today."

She patted a thick manila folder resting on the table. Arthur’s stomach plummeted. Inside that folder lay the details of the offshore accounts he had secretly manipulated to siphon off minor transaction fees.
