My Boyfriend Forced Me to Lie to Police, But an Officer Saved Me
The sterile, harsh fluorescent lights of the police precinct buzzed overhead, casting a cold glow over the gray reception desk. Chloe stood trembling, her fingers gripping the strap of her brown handbag so tightly her knuckles turned white. Her eyes, red-rimmed and swollen from hours of silent crying, darted around the room. In the background, officers moved back and forth, murmuring over paperwork, completely oblivious to the sheer terror radiating from her.
Behind the computer, a seasoned officer looked up, his expression softening slightly as he took in her disheveled beige sweater and shaking frame.
"What can I help you with today, ma'am?" the officer asked, his voice calm and steady.
Chloe swallowed hard, her throat tight and dry. She felt the heavy weight of the decision she was making. If she spoke now, there would be no going back.
"I... I wanted to report..." she stammered, a single tear spilling over her lashes.
Before she could finish the sentence, a sudden, suffocating presence materialized beside her. A heavy hand clamped down on her shoulder, the fingers digging in with a terrifying, familiar grip. Chloe froze, her breath catching in her throat.
She didn't need to look to know who it was. Mason stood there, his dark hair damp from the rain, a wide, cheerful grin plastered across his face. But his eyes were pitch black, boring into the side of her face with a silent, lethal warning.
"Our missing dog," Mason cut in smoothly, his voice dripping with easy charm. He looked at the officer, nodding apologetically. "She's just so devastated. We've been driving around for hours looking for our golden retriever."
The officer looked between them, his gaze lingering on Mason's tight grip on Chloe's shoulder. The air in the room grew thick and heavy with unspoken dread.
"Is that right, ma'am?" the officer asked, his eyes locking onto Chloe's.
The pressure on Chloe's shoulder increased, a painful reminder of what would happen if she dared to tell the truth. Looking at the officer, she forced a weak, trembling nod.
"Yes," Chloe whispered, her voice barely audible. "Our dog."
