Previously: When Chloe tried to report her abusive boyfriend to the police, he suddenly appeared and forced her to lie. But a sharp-eyed officer noticed her terror and set a clever trap.

The Silent Message

Mason thanked the officer with practiced ease, his cheerful demeanor never wavering as he guided Chloe out of the precinct. His hand remained locked onto her shoulder, a physical shackle reminding her that escape was an illusion. The moment they stepped out into the dark, rainy parking lot, the warmth vanished from his face, replaced by a cold, sneering mask of fury.

But just as they reached the passenger side of his car, Mason stopped, patting his pockets. He hissed a curse under his breath. In his haste to intercept her, he had left his car keys on the gray reception counter inside.

"Don't move a single inch," Mason growled, shoving her against the car door. "If I don't see you right here when I get back, you will regret it for the rest of your life."

He turned and jogged back into the station. Chloe stood shivering in the rain, her mind racing. Suddenly, a side door of the precinct clicked open. The officer from the desk walked out, holding a clipboard. He walked briskly past Chloe, pretending to check a nearby patrol car. But as he brushed past her, his hand dived out, slipping a small, folded piece of paper directly into her open handbag.

Chloe's heart leaped. She quickly reached into her bag, grabbed the note, and shoved it deep into her jeans pocket just as Mason came bursting back out of the station doors, keys in hand.

He shoved her into the passenger seat, locked the doors, and slammed his foot on the gas. As the car sped down the dark highway, Mason began to rant, his voice rising in anger. Terrified, Chloe carefully slipped the note from her pocket and unfolded it beneath her purse, shielding it from his view. The hasty handwriting read:

"I know who he is. Mason Vance is wanted for federal fraud and domestic abuse. Do not panic. There is a GPS tracker hidden in the lining of your handbag. Keep him driving. We are right behind you."

Keep him driving. We are right behind you."
