A Disrupted Vow

The scent of fresh lilies filled the grand wedding chapel as Mark stood at the altar, looking at his beautiful bride, Vanessa. The overhead spotlights cast a warm glow on the gathered guests. Everything was perfect, a culmination of years of planning. But just as the minister began the ceremony, the heavy oak doors at the back of the chapel creaked open, shattering the solemn silence.

A young girl, no older than seven, walked hesitantly down the carpeted aisle. Her red hair was tied in messy pigtails, and her bright yellow cardigan was damp with sweat. She was crying hysterically, clutching a crumpled, torn photograph in her tiny hands. The guests whispered in shock, and Vanessa stiffened, her face turning pale. Mark stepped forward, drawn by an inexplicable pull toward the weeping child.

The girl stopped at the altar, looking up at Mark with tear-filled green eyes.

"I don't want money, please. I just want my mom not to go to heaven,"
she sobbed, her voice echoing through the silent chapel.

Mark knelt on the cold stone floor, his heart hammering against his ribs.

"Who are you? Who sent you?"
he asked, trying to keep his voice calm.

"Nobody. I came because she's dying,"
the girl cried, holding out the torn photo. Mark gasped as he recognized his own face from a decade ago, standing next to a laughing woman.

"What's your mother's name?"
Mark whispered.

"Johanda,"
she replied. Mark's breath hitched.
"Johanda?"
he echoed.
"She kept your picture,"
Lily sobbed.

Abandoning his bride and his guests, Mark ran out of the chapel, holding Lily's hand. Minutes later, they arrived at a clinical-green hospital room. Johanda lay pale and weak, hooked to several monitors. Mark rushed to her side, tears streaming down his face.

"I'm here, I'm here. Why didn't you tell me?"
he cried. Johanda opened her eyes weakly and whispered,
"Because... she's not the only one."
