The autumn mist hung heavy over the cobblestone streets of Boston, wrapping the city in a cold, quiet shroud. Jessica pulled her navy trench coat tighter around herself, her boots clicking softly against the damp stones. It was past midnight, and the streets were mostly deserted. She was looking forward to the warmth of her apartment, lost in thoughts of her demanding job, when a sudden, desperate tug on her sleeve made her gasp.

She spun around, her heart leaping into her throat. Standing there in the dim glow of a streetlamp was a young boy, no older than seven. His cheeks were streaked with dirt and tears, his small frame shivering inside a worn denim jacket.

"Hey, don't touch me!" Jessica pulled back, startled.

The boy didn't run. Instead, he looked up at her with large, pleading eyes, his hands trembling as he reached into his pocket. He held up a small object, the metal catching the amber streetlights.

"Excuse me, but you have the same pin," he whimpered.

Jessica froze, her breath catching in her throat. She looked down at his dirty palms. Resting there was a gold leaf pin, intricately crafted, with a large, brilliant blue sapphire shining at its center. Her hand instinctively flew to her own collar, where she wore the exact same pinβ€”a one-of-a-kind family heirloom that had belonged to her mother.

"What are you talking about?" Jessica whispered, shock washing over her.
"My mom has the same pin, here," Max sobbed, holding the jewelry out further. "She told me if I ever got lost or needed help, to look for the lady with the matching leaf."

A single tear welled in Jessica's eye, spilling over her cheek. Her mother had supposedly perished in a devastating house fire fifteen years ago. The pin Jessica wore was recovered from the ashes, a tragic memento of a life cut short. Yet here was this little boy, holding an identical, flawless twin of the heirloom.
