Previously: Walking home on a misty night, Jessica is stopped by a crying boy holding a rare gold pin. It's the exact heirloom her mother wore before she tragically vanished fifteen years ago.

The Secret in Room 104

Jessica’s mind raced with a chaotic mix of disbelief and hope. She knelt on the damp cobblestones, bringing herself eye-level with the crying boy. "What is your name?" she asked, her voice shaking.

"Max," he sniffled, wiping his nose with his sleeve. "My mom is really sick. We're staying at the shelter down the street, but they said we have to leave tomorrow."

Jessica looked from Max's tear-streaked face to the gold pin in his hand. It was impossible. The jeweler who made her mother's pin had sworn it was a unique commission, created specifically for her mother, Evelyn. If another one existed, it meant only one thing: her mother might still be alive.

"Take me to her, Max," Jessica said, her heart hammering against her ribs.

Max nodded eagerly, gripping her hand with his small, cold fingers. He led her away from the historic district and into a rougher part of town, stopping outside a dilapidated motel with a flickering neon sign. They walked down a dimly lit hallway that smelled of damp carpet and old paint, stopping at Room 104.

Max pushed the door open. The room was small and sparse. On the single bed lay a woman, her face pale and drawn, her dark hair streaked with silver. As the door creaked, the woman turned her head. When her eyes met Jessica's, she gasped, her pale hand flying to her chest.

"Jessica?" the woman whispered, her voice cracking with emotion.

Jessica took a step back, her knees threatening to buckle. Despite the hollow cheeks and the visible scars of time and illness, she recognized those eyes. It was Evelyn.

"Mom?" Jessica choked out. "How... how is this possible? We buried you! The police said you died in the fire!"

Evelyn began to weep, sitting up weakly. "I had to let you believe that, sweetheart," she sobbed. "It was the only way to keep you safe."
