Hours passed in a blur of medical procedures. Leo had suffered a severe traumatic brain injury during a training exercise, and his prognosis remained grim. Throughout it all, Buster, the German Shepherd, sat silently under the corner desk, his eyes never leaving Leo’s face. The doctors had reluctantly allowed the dog to stay, moved by his quiet discipline.

Suddenly, in the dead of night, Buster stood up. He let out a low, urgent whine, stepping closer to the bed and nudging Leo’s limp hand. Sarah, who was monitoring the vitals, checked the screens. Everything seemed normal. But Buster grew more frantic, placing his paws on the edge of the mattress and barking softly.

Seconds later, the heart monitor flatlined. Leo had gone into cardiac arrest. Thanks to Buster’s early warning, the resuscitation team was already in the room. They shocked Leo's heart back into rhythm just as his brother, Marcus, walked through the door.

Marcus didn't look like a grieving relative. He wore an expensive suit and carried an air of cold detachment. Instead of rushing to Leo’s side, he stared at the dog with disgust.

"What is this beast doing in a hospital?"

Marcus demanded, his voice dripping with venom. Sarah tried to explain that Buster had just saved Leo's life, but Marcus cut her off. He revealed that he was Leo's sole legal next of kin. Since Leo had no wife or children, Marcus held the power of attorney.

"My brother is a liability now,"

Marcus sneered. He explained that he intended to sign a do-not-resuscitate order and claim Leo’s substantial military life insurance and estate. He also demanded that Buster be handed over to animal control immediately to be euthanized, claiming the dog was "dangerous military property." Sarah was horrified; she was looking at a man willing to kill his own brother and his loyal dog for money.
