Sarah felt a wave of hot anger wash over her. She stood between Marcus and the bed, shielding both Leo and Buster. Marcus reached out to grab Buster's tactical harness, but the German Shepherd let out a low, guttural growl, placing himself defensively in front of his handler. Marcus took a step back, his face turning pale with anger.

"I will have you fired, and I will have this dog destroyed!"

Marcus yelled, pulling out his phone to call security. But Sarah had already anticipated his cruelty. While the doctors had been stabilizing Leo, she had quietly contacted the military liaison listed on Leo's emergency contact sheet. Within minutes, the heavy double doors of the ICU swung open.

An imposing military officer, Captain Vance, walked in, flanked by two military police officers. He looked at Marcus with cold authority.

"Mr. Carter, your power of attorney was revoked six months ago when your brother updated his military will,"

Captain Vance stated, holding up a digital tablet. He explained that Leo had designated his military unit and a trusted veteran's charity to oversee his care and estate in the event of an injury. Furthermore, Buster was a registered military service K9, fully protected under federal law.

Marcus's face crumbled as he realized his greed had failed him. Under the watchful eyes of the military police, he was swiftly escorted out of the hospital, never to return.

Just then, a faint sound came from the bed. Leo’s fingers twitched, brushing against Buster’s wet nose. The dog let out a soft, joyful whimper, resting his head gently on Leo’s chest. Leo slowly opened his eyes, a faint but genuine smile forming on his lips as he saw his loyal companion. Sarah wiped away a tear, knowing that the road to recovery would be long, but Leo and Buster would walk it together, safe and unbroken.
