A Soldier Returns Home Early and Catches His Wife Cruelly Mistreating His Mother
Previously: Returning home from deployment to surprise his family, a soldier walks into a living nightmare when he finds his wife screaming at his crying, defenseless mother.
The Dark Secrets of the House
The dust from the shattered drywall hung heavy in the air. Brenda slowly dragged herself up from the debris, coughing and screaming threats of calling the police, but David ignored her. His focus was entirely on his mother. As he held Evelyn close, he noticed things that made his blood run cold. Her wrists were bruised, her clothes were tattered, and she was dangerously thin. This was not the happy, healthy mother he had been writing letters to for the past ten months.
David turned his fierce gaze to Brenda, who was now leaning against the damaged wall, clutching her side.
"What is going on here, Brenda? Why is my mother living in fear in her own home?" David demanded, his voice dangerously low.
Brenda spat on the floor, trying to regain her composure.
"She’s losing her mind, David! She steals food from the pantry! I have to keep her disciplined, or she’ll ruin us!" Brenda hissed.
Evelyn shook her head frantically, crying into David's chest. She held up the mixing bowl, which contained nothing but a small amount of flour and sugar.
"I wasn't stealing," Evelyn whispered. "I knew you were coming home soon, David. I kept a calendar. I just wanted to bake you your favorite vanilla cake. But Brenda locks the kitchen. She keeps me in the basement, David. It’s so cold down there."
The revelation hit David like a physical blow. The basement? His mother, who suffered from severe arthritis, was being forced to sleep on the concrete floor while Brenda enjoyed the master suite. David stood up, his fists clenched. He walked over to the kitchen desk, searching through the mail Brenda had kept hidden. There, tucked away in a drawer, he found forged bank statements, a fraudulent power of attorney document with his signature poorly copied, and letters from the bank indicating that Brenda was planning to sell the house and flee with the money.
