David felt a deep, sickening betrayal. The woman he had married had systematically abused his mother and plotted to steal everything he had worked for. Standing tall in his military uniform, David pulled out his phone. He didn't call a civilian lawyer; he called his commanding officer and the local sheriff's department, reporting elder abuse, domestic violence, and financial fraud.

Within twenty minutes, police cruisers pulled into the driveway. Brenda tried to play the victim, crying to the officers that her husband had assaulted her, pointing to the broken drywall. But the evidence of her cruelty was written all over the house. The officers descended into the damp, dark basement, finding a single thin mattress on the floor and a bucket. As the handcuffs clicked around Brenda’s wrists, she screamed curses at David, but he didn't even look at her. With the nightmare finally over, David carried his mother’s few belongings up from the basement and settled her into the warmest bedroom in the house. He promised her that she would never have to worry, cry, or feel cold ever again. Later that evening, David cleaned up the broken drywall, but he left the kitchen exactly as it was. Together, the soldier and his mother stood side by side at the counter, finally baking the vanilla cake they had both dreamed of.
