Previously: On his wedding day, Thomas is confronted by a homeless woman who reveals a dark family secret that shatters his perfect life and exposes his adoptive mother's lies.

Before Thomas could find his voice, a sharp, commanding cry echoed from the top of the stairs. Eleanor, clad in a stunning emerald mother-of-the-groom gown, rushed down the steps. Her face was stark white, her eyes wild with a terror she could not hide.

The Confrontation on the Stairs

"Get this woman out of here!"
Eleanor shrieked, gesturing frantically to the security guards.
"She's a trespasser! She's mentally unstable!"

But Thomas raised a hand, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.

"No. Nobody touches her. What is this photo, Eleanor?"

The older woman in the trench coat, Martha, took a deep breath, her voice trembling but clear.

"She won't tell you the truth, Thomas. Because the truth is that she stole you from me."

A collective gasp rippled through the wedding guests. Martha explained that twenty-eight years ago, Eleanor and her husband, a powerful local judge, had been desperate for an heir. Martha had been a young, impoverished mother, completely alone. Using his immense legal influence, the judge had framed Martha for a crime she did not commit, threatening her with decades in prison unless she signed away her parental rights.

"That photo was taken the day they forced me to sign those papers,"
Martha wept.
"They promised I would always be a part of your life. But as soon as they took you, they ran me out of town and threatened to destroy me if I ever returned. I've spent twenty-eight years trying to clear my name and find my boy."

Thomas looked from Martha's tear-streaked, weathered face to Eleanor, who was shaking violently.

"Tell me she’s lying,"
Thomas pleaded, hoping his adoptive mother would offer some logical explanation.

But Eleanor could not meet his gaze. She covered her face with her manicured hands, sobbing.

"We did it for you, Thomas! We gave you a beautiful life! You would have had nothing with her!"

The admission hung in the air, cold and heavy, shattering the remaining illusions of Thomas’s childhood.
