The Power Shifts

Marcus scoffed, crossing his arms. He didn't care about some doctor. "I don't care who you are, mister. This is my diner, and I run it my way. This kid is a liability and he's gone."

Arthur didn't even look at Marcus as he spoke into his phone. "Yes, Richard. I'm standing inside the Golden Griddle. I want the commercial lease agreement pulled up immediately. I believe we have a clause regarding the immediate termination of the lease if the tenant exhibits gross negligence or endangers public safety."

Marcus’s smug expression crumbled. His bald head began to glisten with sweat. The Golden Griddle was a franchise, but the building itself was owned by a local real estate conglomerate. It dawned on Marcus that the man standing before him was not just a doctor, but Dr. Michael Carter—the billionaire philanthropist whose family owned half the commercial properties in the city.

"Wait... Dr. Carter?" Marcus stammered, his voice losing its aggressive edge. "Let's not do anything rash. I was just trying to maintain order in my restaurant. Surely you understand."

Arthur ignored him, continuing his phone call. "Also, contact the university's medical program. Tell them I have found the perfect candidate for the full-ride emergency medical scholarship. I want his enrollment expedited." Arthur hung up and looked at Toby, who was standing in utter disbelief. Toby had been studying pre-med, working double shifts just to pay for a single class at a time.

"You have a gift, young man. You kept your cool when everyone else panicked. That is what makes a true doctor," Arthur said, placing a warm hand on Toby's shoulder.

Marcus, realizing he was about to lose his business, desperately tried to backpedal. He turned to Toby with a forced, trembling smile.

"Toby, buddy! I was just stressed. You're not fired! In fact, how about a promotion? Assistant manager, starting today!" Marcus pleaded.

Assistant manager, starting today!" Marcus pleaded.
