A Cold Welcome

The obsidian lobby of Vanguard Private Trust was designed to intimidate the ordinary. Its towering marble pillars, polished to a mirror shine, reflected the cold purple glow of the high-security elevator bank. Edward, a rising star in the wealth management division, adjusted his charcoal wool suit and smoothed his silk tie. He took pride in policing this sacred space of the ultra-wealthy. To Edward, appearance was everything. If you did not look like you belonged, you did not deserve to breathe the filtered air of the private wing.

That was why his eyes narrowed the moment the glass doors slid open to reveal an elderly woman. She wore a faded olive green utility jacket, worn boots, and a simple grey knitted beanie. She looked completely out of place amidst the sleek, modern luxury of the lobby. She moved slowly, her eyes scanning the ceiling with quiet curiosity.

Edward immediately stepped out from behind his mahogany desk, intercepting her before she could take another step. His voice carried a sharp, dismissive edge.

"You lost, ma'am? This wing is for private clients, people with accounts."

The elderly woman, whose name was Hazel, stopped. She looked at him with calm, intelligent eyes that did not waver under his harsh glare. Instead of turning back, she bypassed him entirely, walking directly toward the high-security elevator panel glowing with a soft purple light.

Edward’s heart skipped a beat. Panic flared in his chest as he saw her reach into her pocket and pull out a small brass cylinder. He lunged forward, his polished oxfords sliding on the marble floor.

"Wait, what is that? Step away from there!"

Before he could grab her arm, Hazel pressed the device against the scanner. Instantly, the purple light flashed a violent crimson. Across the lobby, Edward’s laptop screen erupted in a flurry of bright red security alerts, accompanied by a low, pulsing alarm. He froze, staring at the screen, then looked back at Hazel. She turned to face him, her expression entirely serene, holding a look of absolute authority.

"You should have let me in," she said softly.
