Previously: When a young banker tries to throw a poorly dressed elderly woman out of his private wing, he learns a harsh lesson about who truly holds the power.

The Escalation

Edward's hands shook as he reached for his radio. The silent security protocols had been breached, a situation he had only ever read about in emergency manuals. Within seconds, three armed security guards burst through the heavy double doors, their boots echoing loudly against the polished stone. They formed a tight perimeter around Hazel, their hands resting ominously on their holsters.

"Step away from the panel and put your hands where we can see them!" the lead guard commanded.

Edward pointed a trembling finger at Hazel, his voice cracking with a mixture of fear and newfound authority.

"Arrest her! She has some kind of bypass device. She’s trying to hack our internal servers!"

Hazel did not flinch. She stood perfectly still, her hands clasped calmly in front of her worn utility jacket. She looked at Edward not with fear, but with a profound, pitying disappointment. Before the guards could move in, the elevator doors chimed and slid open. Out stepped Arthur Pendelton, the regional director, his face pale and slick with sweat.

Arthur had been in the middle of a high-level board meeting when the red alert triggered on his tablet. He gasped for air, his eyes scanning the tense standoff. Edward smiled, believing his quick action would secure him a promotion.

"Mr. Pendelton, thank goodness. I caught this intruder trying to breach the secure systems. I am having her removed immediately," Edward declared proudly.

Arthur did not even look at Edward. His gaze was locked on Hazel. The tablet slipped from his hand, shattering on the cold marble floor. The guards froze, confused by their director's reaction. Arthur stumbled forward, his knees trembling as he pushed past the security team.

To Edward’s absolute horror, the powerful regional director bowed deeply, his voice shaking with reverence.

"Mrs. Vance... we had no idea you were coming. Please accept our humblest apologies."

Edward's breath caught in his throat. The name echoed in his mind like a death knell. Vance. As in Vance Holdings, the multi-billion-dollar trust that owned the very ground they stood on.
