The Cold Marble Floor

The grand foyer of the Benson estate was a masterpiece of classical architecture, boasting soaring ceilings and hand-polished marble floors that reflected the light of a massive crystal chandelier. Yet, on this particular afternoon, the luxury felt cold and suffocating. Sophia kneeled on the wet floor, her simple olive dress soaked at the knees. With trembling hands, she clutched a wooden scrubbing brush, pushing it back and forth against the stubborn stains on the marble. She did not look up, keeping her eyes cast down as she worked in silence, her breath shallow.

Suddenly, the heavy oak double doors swung open. William, a successful businessman in his late thirties, stepped into the foyer. Clad in a tailored navy suit and carrying a leather briefcase, he looked every bit the master of the house. He stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes locking onto the young woman kneeling on the floor. A mixture of shock and sudden, burning anger flashed across his face. Before he could speak, a soft, mocking laugh echoed from the grand staircase.

Olivia, his glamorous fiancée, descended the stairs slowly, a delicate wine glass cradled in her manicured hand. She wore a designer silk dress, her eyes dripping with condescension as she looked down at Sophia. "She's just doing what she's good at, cleaning," Olivia said dismissively, taking a slow sip of her wine. She didn't notice the way William’s jaw clenched, or how his knuckles turned white around the handle of his briefcase.

Without a word to Olivia, William pulled his phone from his pocket. His voice was a low, dangerous growl as he barked into the receiver,

"Cancel everything, now!"
Olivia’s smile instantly vanished, replaced by a look of sheer confusion. She gasped, her voice high and panicked.
"What?"
William turned his gaze to her, his eyes as cold as ice.
"This house is no longer yours,"
he stated flatly. On the floor, Sophia finally stopped scrubbing and looked up, her eyes wide with a mixture of fear and quiet hope.
