Previously: He thought his mansion was more important than lives. But when the flames reached his own family, his world shattered. He'd soon learn the price of his pride.

A Father's Nightmare

Captain Ruth strode through the falling embers, the rain sizzling against her protective gear. She walked directly into the glare of my car's headlights, the child held aloft. The unconscious child was small, fragile, a stark contrast to the raging inferno behind them. As she brought the child closer, the stark reality began to dawn on me, a chilling premonition I desperately tried to ignore.

"Look at who was inside that fire, Ross!"

Ruth's voice boomed, rough from the smoke, yet filled with an undeniable authority. My arrogant smirk froze, then vanished. The sterile cyan light from the hospital suite’s cardiac monitor caught the child’s face. It was then I saw it – the smudged cheeks, the tangled blonde hair, the tiny silver charm bracelet. Emma. My seven-year-old daughter. My breath hitched. She was supposed to be in New York. This couldn't be happening.

"Emma... no, she was supposed to be in New York!"

My voice was a strangled whisper, a terrified stammer. Tears of smoke-irritation welled in Ruth's eyes, but her jaw remained locked, her expression one of righteous judgment. In a desperate frenzy, I lunged forward, reaching for my daughter. But Ruth was faster, her forearm a solid block of Kevlar. The impact sent me stumbling backward onto the wet cobblestones, my eyes wide with paralyzed shock.

"Don't touch her! You barricaded the driveway and blocked the only life-support rig!"

Her words were cutting, guttural. The full weight of my actions crashed down on me. The fire trucks I had so arrogantly dismissed were her only ambulance. My pride, my wealth, my villa – all of it meant nothing now. All that mattered was Emma, lying unconscious in the arms of this heroic firefighter.
