Previously: He thought his mansion was more important than lives. But when the flames reached his own family, his world shattered. He'd soon learn the price of his pride.

Redemption in the Rain

I sank to my knees, the cold, muddy cobblestones a harsh contrast to the luxury I was accustomed to. Rain plastered my silver hair to my forehead, mingling with the tears streaming down my hollow cheeks. My jaw trembled uncontrollably, a physical manifestation of the suffocating remorse that had finally consumed me. The grandeur of my villa, now a smoldering ruin behind Captain Ruth, seemed like a cruel joke.

"Please save her... take the villa, take everything, just let the medics through!"

My voice was a broken sob, each word ripped from the depths of my shattered soul. I offered everything, my entire world, for a chance at my daughter’s life. Captain Ruth, her nostrils flaring in stern contempt, didn't waste a moment on my pleas. Her focus was solely on the unconscious child, her skilled hands checking the faint radial pulse. She secured Emma onto a waiting stretcher under the sterile blue light of the hospital entrance.

As Ruth turned and rushed towards the medical professionals, the grand roof of my villa collapsed behind her in a colossal explosion of embers. It was a fitting end to the monument of my hubris. Left alone on the ground, amidst the mud and the wreckage of my life, I could only watch as Emma was whisked away. Ruth paused at the entrance, her voice carrying a chilling finality over the roar of the dying fire.

"The fire trucks you blocked were her only ambulance. Pray to God her heart monitor doesn't flatline, Senator."

Her words struck me like a physical blow. I collapsed forward, my forehead hitting the mud, my body convulsing with voiceless agony. In that moment, stripped of all pretense, I was just a father, broken and ruined by his own arrogance. The true cost of my pride was laid bare in the relentless rain, a debt I could never truly repay, but a lesson I would carry for the rest of my life.
