The Storm Breaks

The grand five-star hotel lobby was a cathedral of polished black marble and crystal chandeliers, but under the violent midnight thunderstorm, it felt more like a tomb. Twenty-foot arched windows rattled, not from the wind, but from the sheer force of Vivian Beaumont’s rage. Flashes of electric blue lightning strobed across the slick floor, reflecting the rain-streaked glass and the opulent fixtures. The relentless drumming of heavy rain and deep rumbling thunder formed a chaotic symphony. Amidst this tempest, Vivian, a 56-year-old art professor with the bearing of a queen and the cruelty to match, confronted her disowned daughter, Noah Vance. Noah, a 21-year-old painter with smudges of Prussian blue oil paint on her cheekbone, stood vulnerable, her damp chestnut hair clinging to her temples. Her oversized cream cable-knit sweater was frayed, her paint-splattered linen trousers soaked, her leather boots heavy with rain.

Vivian, draped in an immaculate charcoal houndstooth trench coat, sneered. "You possess zero artistic soul, Noah—this pathetic amateur garbage belongs in the dumpster!" With vicious theatrical mockery, she drove both hands violently through Noah’s raw textured oil canvas. The pine stretcher bars snapped with a loud, sickening splintering crack that echoed through the cavernous lobby. Ripped linen threads tore apart amidst the blinding strobe flashes of lightning. Noah remained silent, her breath hitching audibly, tears welling along her lower eyelids, her chin quivering in devastated heartbreak. Vivian then hurled the splintered canvas remnants onto the slick marble with a sharp percussive clatter. Noah dropped to her knees, her bruised, pigment-stained fingers scrambling to gather the shredded painted linen as raindrops streaked down the glass behind her. "Crawl back to the gutters before hotel security drags you into the freezing rain," Vivian commanded with dismissive disdain.
