Previously: At a high-society gala, a brilliant autistic orderly's keen observation clashes with a renowned surgeon's arrogance, leading to a life-or-death confrontation over a child's mysterious illness.

The Confrontation

In a blur of motion, Jack lunged. His rough, calloused hand clamped around Dr. Knox's tuxedoed wrist with bone-jarring force. The sudden deceleration sent the surgeon off balance, his crystal champagne flute shattering violently against the marble floor with a sharp, ringing crash. The ballroom fell silent, all eyes now on the two men.

“Do not plunge that needle,” Jack said, his voice flat, rapid, and unblinking in its intensity. “His heart will rupture in four seconds.”

Dr. Knox stared, his jaw slack, his eyes wide with a mixture of shock and disbelief. He was being physically restrained by an orderly. Enraged, he violently wrenched his arm free, his chest heaving. Spittle flew from his lips as he shoved Jack backward. Jack stumbled, his faded cotton scrubs crinkling, but he remained upright against a gilded marble pillar, his gaze unwavering.

“How dare an autistic floor-sweeper touch my hand—security, drag this lunatic out!” Knox spat, his aristocratic fury palpable.

Jack didn't flinch. His chin quivered slightly, a flicker of the immense sensory input he was processing, but his index finger pointed with geometric precision at the child's fingernails and constricted pupils. He dropped smoothly to his knees beside the boy. With a practiced touch, he pressed the boy's thumb bed, revealing the tell-tale delayed chocolate-brown venous pooling and subungual splinter hemorrhages.

“It is acute methemoglobinemia from silver nitrate ingestion, not allergies—epinephrine triggers fatal ventricular fibrillation,” Jack stated with clinical, monotonic precision. Tears of sensory overload glistened along his lower eyelids.

Dr. Knox watched, his sneer curdling into mortified disbelief. Cold sweat beaded on his wrinkled forehead. The unused epinephrine injector slipped from his limp fingers, clattering hollowly against the marble. The stark reality of his potentially fatal error, exposed by an orderly, began to dawn on him.
