Previously: At my family's grand gala, a tattered stranger stepped onto the ballroom floor and claimed he could do the impossible—make me stand up from my wheelchair and dance.

A Leap of Faith

Arthur saw the vial and lunged to kick it away, but Clara, fueled by a sudden surge of adrenaline and betrayal, threw herself forward out of the wheelchair. She collapsed onto the cold marble floor, her useless legs dragging behind her. The guests gasped as the wealthy heiress crawled desperately toward the blue vial. Her fingers brushed the cold glass just as Arthur grabbed her waist to pull her back.

"Let go of me!"
Clara screamed, uncorking the vial with her teeth and swallowing the bitter liquid inside. Arthur stared at her in horror, realizing his golden cage had shattered. For an agonizing minute, nothing happened. Arthur sneered,
"You see? He's a fraud. You'll never walk, Clara. You need me."

But then, a burning sensation coursed through Clara's veins. The chronic numbness that had plagued her for three years began to dissolve, replaced by a fierce, tingling heat. She placed her palms flat on the floor. Slowly, miraculously, she pushed herself up. Her knees shook violently, but they held her weight. She stood, towering over her stunned fiancé.

The ballroom erupted into cheers and tears. Arthur fell to his knees, knowing his crime was exposed to the entire city's elite. The police, called by Leo beforehand, burst through the doors and immediately handcuffed Arthur, who was sobbing in disgrace.

Clara turned her tear-streaked face toward Leo, who had been released by the guards. He walked over to her, his tattered appearance contrasting beautifully with her cobalt gown. He extended his hand once more.

"I believe I promised you a dance,"
he said softly. Clara smiled, took his hand, and took her very first steps toward a new, free life. Sometimes, the people who seem to have the least are the ones who can give us back our entire world.

The End
