The damp evening air hung heavy with the smell of exhaust and cheap grease. Under the buzzing, flickering pink neon sign of the highway diner, Marcus adjusted his leather vest. He was a thirty-five-year-old biker, built like a brick wall, with tattoos tracing down his burly arms. He had seen a lot of dark things on these roads, but nothing prepared him for the sight in the alley. Shivering near a dumpster, surrounded by spilled fries, was twenty-year-old Lily. Her flannel shirt was damp, and her eyes were wide with sheer terror.

The Alleyway Discovery

Marcus knelt on the wet asphalt, his boots splashing in the puddles. His gruff voice softened as he tried to calm her. "Hey, easy now. I'm not going to hurt you," he murmured. As he reached out to help her up, his eyes caught a thick, white bandage taped awkwardly over her shoulder. His protective instincts, honed by years on the streets, flared. Gently, with surprising tenderness for a man of his size, Marcus peeled back the adhesive. Beneath it lay a stark white wristband with a strange serial number.

"Who gave you this?"

Marcus asked, holding the plastic band up. His voice was laced with deep concern. Lily looked down at the wet ground, a tear cutting a clean path through the grime on her cheek. "My mom. Before," she whispered, her voice trembling. Before Marcus could ask what "before" meant, the sharp wail of sirens pierced the night. Bright headlights swept across the brick walls. Marcus's head snapped up. "Down!" he barked, throwing his heavy frame over her to shield her. "Fast!" he urged, pulling her behind a stack of wooden crates just as three police motorcycles roared past the mouth of the alley, their searchlights sweeping the darkness.
